Increased circulating levels of bacterial endotoxins have been associated with chronic inflammation. Poor glycemic control increases the risk of bacterial infections and the development of micro- and macrovascular complications in patients with type 1 diabetes. We hypothesize that problems in the gut-kidney axis may have a significant impact on the progression of diabetic complications such as diabetic nephropathy.
