One new Academy Research Fellow and one Academy Project at Folkhälsan Research Center receive funding

Janne Purhonen has been granted funding as an Academy Research Fellow by the Research Council of Finland’s Scientific Council for Biosciences, Health and the Environment. In addition, a project on clinical and genetic characteristics of early-onset osteoporosis, led by Outi Mäkitie, has received Academy Project funding.
Janne Purhonen: Temperature dependency of nucleocytoplasmic O-glycosylation: mechanism and significance
– The Academy Research Fellowship funding means for me a return to Finland and to the Folkhälsan Research Center after three years of research in Sweden and Denmark, says Janne Purhonen.
– With the funding, I can start a new line of research focusing on an enigmatic protein modification called O-linked N-acetylglucosaminylation. This protein modification has inherent links to several common chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer – but I think it is basic research and studies on rare monogenic diseases that will reveal its ultimate biological function and medical relevance.

Outi Mäkitie: Clinical and genetic characteristics of early-onset osteoporosis
– I am very grateful for this new funding from the Research Council of Finland. It is an important recognition of our research, says Outi Mäkitie.
Outi Mäkitie is Group Leader at Folkhälsan Research Center and Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology and Chief Physician at the Children’s Hospital, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital.
– The very positive feedback from the Research Council validates our research approach and encourages us to continue the hard work towards our research goals. This long-term funding enables the team to fully focus on our research project for the coming four years.
